From the artist: “Plates 12. The central flower-like motif is based on a very small detail of a 19th century dinner plate produced in Stoke-on-Trent. The luminous russet and red colours used in the centre of the painting are offset by flat areas of matt blue gouache in the back and foreground. The background of the board has been carved with a series of horizontal lines that catch the light when viewing the painting from differing angles.”
