Lâl Yılmaz
Lâl Yılmaz (b. 2002, Istanbul, Turkey) is a visual artist based in London, working across printed textiles, drawing and painting. She studied Textile Design at Central Saint Martins. Her practice draws on the creation of alternate worlds, built through a personal visual language of symbols, characters and landscapes. The subjects of her work are hybrid beings, forming ambiguous, in between states of transformation within the surreal narrative they are placed in. She envisions her imagery as fragments of a theatrical stage — each composition a scene. She is inspired by the depths of storytelling within nature, rituals, folklore, mythologies and philosophy; often tangling with an inquisitive exploration of her own emotional states.
"My recent work has become more figurative, showing the inner lives and interactions of the subjects rather than just their outer appearance. I find the grotesque and bizarre more intriguing over the pretty and polished to show the vulnerabilities of the figures. Often things emerge from my unconscious as I’m creating and this spontaneity brings the work to life."
