Isabel Violet
Isabel Bazett is a figurative artist working primarily in oil paint. Her practice encompasses drawing and painting and is rooted in close observation of people and spaces. She graduated from the Welsh School of Architecture with an MA in Architecture in 2020; a background that continues to inform her sensitivity to space, structure, and human presence.
Bazett is drawn to the quiet charge that people bring into a room - the subtle energies that linger and shift. She works quickly, painting alla prima to stay close to instinct and sensation, allowing chance and uncertainty to guide the process. By resisting preconceived outcomes, her paintings remain open, responsive, and alive to the moment of their making. Her practice begins in observation: drawing, writing, and collecting fragments from her surroundings. These encounters form a meeting point where memory, place, and layered histories intersect, later unfolding within the studio.
Living in London allows Bazett regular access to galleries and collections of the great masters, fostering an ongoing dialogue with art history through painting. For Bazett, the image serves as a vessel for oil paint: its weight, colour and gesture. Visible brushstrokes mark time, holding moments like memories, where emotion saturates colour and the act of painting becomes a quiet exchange between artist, history and the present.
