Liz Temperley
Liz is an artist living and working in Lewes, East Sussex.
She started her Artist Residency in Motherhood in 2022, when her first baby was 9 months old. At the same time, and after spending 13 years as an illustrator using watercolours, Liz started painting using acrylics and oils.
She began an enquiry into the tangled, duality of her roles as Mother and Artist, observing her overwhelming need to move from the heart in both. Her practice evolved as a tool to help Liz become grounded, speak with authenticity and to observe a new identity emerging. Using new mediums to explore her narrative on the canvas; an act of visual representation confronting both her external and inner worlds.
Of her own journey as an artist, Liz comments, “In the heady moments I’ve reached for memories; the love and lore bound to the local landscape. In the numb moments I’ve used the palette to tell me how I feel, looking to my garden and the seasons to reflect my experience, transforming my self-perception. Exploring the dreamscape as I journey through the sleeplessness; the liminal space between Mother and the everyday. In an effort to bind myself to something tangible, what I knew, who I was, who I am now.”
